… watching football. The team I support, Huddersfield Town, are through to the League 1 play offs. This means they have to play Bournemouth FC at their gaff today and Bournemouth FC play us at ours on Wednesday. If we win over bothlegs, we then play the winners of the other two teams in the play-offs which will be either Peterborough or MK Dons. I reckon it will be Town v Peterborough in the final. Finalists don’t get to play at Wembley so we have to make do with a trip to Old Trafford.
Come on Town! Helena expects! After the play-offs match (12.45 KO) it’s the FA Cup Final. Man City v underdogs Stoke City. Should be interesting but I’m not particularly bothered who wins.
Continuing the football theme, did anyone see the brilliant coverage of the Dick, Kerrs Ladies on the One Show last Wednesday? It featured Gail Newsham being interviewed by Gabby Logan. Gail is the woman I met in Preston last year who wrote ‘A League of their Own’ and knows all there is to know about this first kick-ass ladies’ team. Gail talked about how the FAs ban on allowing women to play proper football in 1921 was the ‘biggest injustice to sport in the last century.’ That’s how passionately she feels about it. The One Show found some brilliant early footage of the Dick Kerrs, resplendent in shorts, long stripy jerseys and fetching knitted caps.
Tomorrow I’ll be travelling to North Wales as I’m teaching in the Denbighshire Writing Squad on Monday. I think this is the 5th or 6th time I’ve been invited to work with the squads. Each squad is made up of about 20 children from varius Y5&6 classes who display a talent for writing. Three times a year they get to leave school and work with either a writer, a poet, a journalist or someone linked to professional writing. How amazing is that? Nurturing talent. Well done Wales!
