Book Signing with the Crewe Crew

Me with Lizzie Craven, future England and Everton Ladies goalkeeper

I launched ‘Do Shinpads Come in Pink?’ yesterday at Waterstones in Crewe. Why Crewe and not somewhere nearer to home or a bit more glamorous (no offence, Crewe) I hear you ask?  Because of Lizzie Craven, that’s why. Lizzie loves the Girls FC books and wrote to tell me so. She loves them so much she dressed as Megan on World Book Day at her school. Lizzie also became my goalkeeping consultant for ‘Here We Go,’ the final book in the series, out in August .

Lizzie as Megan, the goalie in Girls FC.

I figured that level of  dedication deserved some kind of reward so, as Lizzie lives in Crewe, off to Crewe I went.

At first I was worried that Lizzie hadn’t received my email about the event but round about midday in she bounded, wearing her Everton Girls’ Centre of Excellence kit and hauling her collection of Girls FC  books.  Yay!  It was such a treat to meet Lizzie, especially when her mum and dad told me how my Girls FC books had got Lizzie into reading.  A family friend had sent her a copy of Can Ponies Take Penalties?  And KAPOW! – she was away.  Until then  Lizzie hadn’t really liked reading. How wonderful is that?  My books inspiring someone to read? I wished I’d had a tape recorder so I could replay those words every time I feel despondent about my sales figures!   Anyway, we had a lovely long chat  as I signed Lizzie’s collection and it was a pleasure to meet such a  delightful family.

Hot on Lizzie’s heels came Ellie, Lizzie’s team mate and another Girls FC fan. Hi Ellie!

I also have to thank the Crewe Chronicle for advertising the event because that encouraged other girls to visit Waterstones and buy my books, too. I hope you enjoy them, Amy and *Tara, and good luck with the rest of the season.  Say a huge thank you to your dads for being so generous and buying all the titles.  Get in!

I sold several books to customers who were browsing, too, and had no interest in football. It was great meeting you all.

Finally a big thank you to Emma, Angela and everyone at the Waterstones store in Crewe for hosting the event. I know Keris Stainton is signing there on July 7th. She’s in for a treat.

*Tara, if you’re reading this, have I got your name right? Or totally wrong? Tyra?  Or absolutely not even close? *going batty in my old age*

    • Hi Cerys,

Of course I remember you. I’m so glad you’re enjoying Do Goalkeepers Wear Tiaras? especially as I know it wasn’t your usual type of book. I’m sure your dad will buy you the rest of the series – just tell him that every book you read makes you brainier! :) :)
